Old Squaw Lake
Selected Projects > Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens
During excavations to create the lakes and wader scrapes at Pensthorpe, one million tons of aggregates were removed. The work uncovered archaeological finds including a hand axe believed to date from 8000 BC. Tusks and teeth from woolly mammoths were also found. Based on this archaeological theme, a series of boardwalk and exhibition huts are proposed on 'Old Squaw Lake' to interpret the Neolithic era and the role played by countless generations of people in the rich wildlife of the Wensum Valley.
As part of this project a substantial wet reedbed extension has been proposed to create a habitat for Bearded Reedling, Bittern, Water Vole, Reed Warbler, Savi's Warbler, Little Egret, Water Rail, Swallowtail Butterfly and Common Frog.
